Pharmocognosy and pharmaceutical botany


A brief history

The disciplines of Pharmaceutical Botany and Pharmacognosy were established together with the institution of the National Pharmaceutical Education (1964). Before 1991, the teaching of these two disciplines and the research activity related to them were carried out by different    departments: The  Department of Biology from 1964 to 1966; The Department of Pharmacology, from 1966 to 1972 (The Head of the Department: Doctor in Medicine, Professor Efim Muhin); The Department of Pharmacy from 1972 to 1984 (The Head of the Department: Doctor in Pharmacy, Associate Professor Vasile Procopisin); The Department of Technology of Drugs and Pharmacognosy from 1984 to 1991 (The Head of the Department: Doctor in Pharmacy, Associate Professor Eugene Diug). The Department of Pharmacognosy and Pharmaceutical Botany was founded in November 1991 by the decree of the Rector.  The Associate Professor, Doctor in Pharmacy Anatoly Nistreanu, who is currently a Full Professor, was appointed the Head of the Department.

The Department also participates within the graduate school, offering Master Degrees,  resident and PhD courses as well as in the continuing education of pharmacists with the thematic of the course “The use of Medicinal Plants  and Authorized Phytopreparation in the Republic of  Moldova”.

The most notable figures in the teaching of Pharmaceutical Botany and Pharmacognosy  are: Associate Professor, Doctor in Biology Peter Sârghii (the Pharmaceutical Botany); Associate Professor, Doctor in Pharmacy, Habilitated Doctor in Pharmacy (2010) George Goreanu (Pharmacognosy); Associate Professor, Full Professor (2006), Doctor in Pharmacy, Head of Department (1991) Anatoly Nistreanu (Pharmacognosy and Toxic Plants). Each one taught or has been teaching for more than 40 years.

Doctor in Biology, Habilitated Doctor in Biology (2011), Associate Professor Tatiana Calalb has worked within the Department since 2002, teaching the Pharmaceutical Botany, In Vitro Biotechnology of Medicinal Plants and Genetically Modified Organisms. Doctor in Pharmacy, Maria Cojocaru-Toma who is currently teaching Pharmacognosy has joined the Department in 2012.

The Department traditionally organizes annual conferences in Pharmaceutical Botany (for the first-year students) and Pharmacognosy (for the third-year students) to analyze and discuss the results of the studies carried on during practical activities.

In 2011-2013 the Department was visited by Prof. S. Oroian, from the University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Targu Mures. During her visit, the Department organized conferences on the following topics: “Preserving the Biodiversity and Human Biosecurity”, “The European Strategy and Bioconservation of Medicinal Plants”, “Soft Drugs: The legal and civic Aspects”. The conferences were attended by the teaching staff of the Faculty together with the first and third-year students.
